Building Bridges on the Camino St. Jacques a Photo Essay and Poem

Building Bridges on the Camino St. Jacques a Photo Essay and Poem

While Ol is recuperating from his Camino "injury" he used the time to edit his photos. He noticed that he has taken lots of photos of the beautiful bridges that dot the Camino. Enjoy these beautiful bridges found on the French portion of the Camino between Le Puy en Velay and Saint Jean Pied de Port. Bridges bring us together, they don't divide us. Bridges join communities and make it possible for us to easily travel to remote places. We could not travel the Camino without br

“Let’s get a sandwich” I said to Ol. It didn’t look like we could make it to the next town for France’s lunch hour so we decided to go to the bakery we passed coming into town. “Do you have sandwiches?” I asked. “We are a bakery, we have bread, if you want meat you must go to the butcher shop on the next block” she replied. We bought some bread and walked a block and entered the butcher shop. “We would like some meat for a sandwich” I said. “We have lots of meat to choose fro

Church's Chicken? The Miracle of the Hen and the Rooster, Santo Domingo, Spain

Ol and I entered the beautiful cathedral in Santo Domingo. “Is that a real chicken, it’s moving” Ol says. Sure enough I looked up and there was a chicken and a rooster! There are legends of numerous miracles along the Camino de Santiago. We were told to be sure to visit the Cathedral of Santa Domingo of La Calzada, the site of one of the camino’s most unusual. Legend tells of a young German Pilgrim who was walking to Santiago with his parents when they decided to rest at an

“The engines have been taken out of the boat and are in the shop being worked on.” Bill told us. “Well, while you finish working on the boat we will spend the next few months in France and Spain hiking the Camino de Santiago. We’ve wanted to do that for a while now and it will give you time to finish the boat.” I said. “You can meet me in Florida when you get back from Europe and we can then cross over to the Caribbean and sail south from there.” Bill said. “That sounds like

The Reason We Walk, St. Jean Pied-de-Port, France

We spotted a picnic table and decided that this would be a good place for lunch. We unwrapped our sandwiches which we had purchased before we left town and we began to eat. We were enjoying our meal and being off of our feet for a few minutes when an elderly man with long grey hair approached. “Do you mind if I join you?” The man asked in a thick German accent. “Not at all! Feel free to join us” I said. The man sat down and began to tell us his story. He told us that he was a

The Long Road to St. Jaques, France

“I think that I might have injured the tendons in my foot” said the beautiful twenty-something woman from Australia staying at our gite. She was stretching her muscles between yoga poses on the lawn. Her gold nose ring glistened in the sunlight. “I think you need to rest it for a day” I said, immediately springing into my mother role of taking care of the young hikers we meet on the trail. “Do you think so?” She asked. “It seems better when I rest for a bit.” “It is probably
The Crosses of the Chemins de Compostelle, A Pilgrim’s Blessing, France

The Crosses of the Chemins de Compostelle, A Pilgrim’s Blessing, France

The entire Chemins de Compostelle is marked with crosses to help Pilgrim's find their way. All different, all beautiful. A place for reflection. To accompany the images, we have posted the Pilgrim's Blessing, that we were given at the Cathedral Notre-Dame, Le Puy-en-Velay when we began our journey. Almighty God You never cease to show your goodness, to those who love you, And you allow yourself to be found by those who seek you, Look favorably upon your servants who are setti

The French Way, Chemin St. Jacques, France

If I would have asked Ol if he would like to take a few months and walk from Jackson, Mississippi to Key West, Florida he would have probably tried to have me committed. But that is essentially what we are doing hiking the Camino de Santiago, with mountains and hills between. I have found it’s all in the way I ask. So a few months ago when I asked Ol if he would like to go to Europe instead of Asia, I received an enthusiastic “yes!”. How about we travel slowly and visit UNESC

Parlez Vous Anglais?Chemin St. Jacques, France

Our children Liv and Ollie laughed when we told them we were going to spend a month in France, hiking through rural villages. After traveling with us overseas they know how I generally get by with charades and google translate. Ol just uses simple Spanish in all situations, regardless of the country we are in. He thinks a Spanish “gracias” and “por favor” will get you through anything. Before we left on our journey I practiced my French on my iPad and both Ollie and Liv tried
